The Fort Knox and Penobscot Narrows Observatory is a pretty cool day trip if you are in the area and get the chance to check them out.
I had never been there myself so it was pretty cool to see it for the first time with my family. It rained the day we visited but we still had a pretty great time.

The fort itself has a lot of ground to cover and explore. My kids spent time crawling in and out of the darkness and having a blast. VERY Cool.
You take an elevator to the top of the observatory so even if you are afraid of heights it is not that scary (you cannot see out).
The view is phenomenal and well worth the trip up.
My oldest is deathly afraid of heights and managed to make it up the few flights of stairs (after you get off the elevator) it takes to get to the top level.
